AMD's drop was about expectations, not results

Revenue, earnings and guidance all cleared consensus, and the stock still fell 7.0%

Revenue and EPS beat consensus this quarter, and revenue guidance also came in above consensus, with expanding AI data-center demand as the core of the earnings case

Even so, investors are asking for a bigger AI payoff, and on top of that the pre-earnings run-up in the share price was cited

Marvell (MRVL) fell -3.5% and Qualcomm (QCOM) -3.2%, while Nvidia (NVDA) went the other way at +3.4%

That said, the AI data-center demand underpinning the earnings case still holds; the August 7 Employment Situation (NFP) and the August 12 CPI print are the next test

Hormuz traffic talks push oil lower

Reports of Iran-U.S. negotiations over shipping traffic pushed back supply-disruption fears

The proposed deal is reported to give Iran control over inbound traffic through the Strait of Hormuz

On the negotiation reports, oil fell -0.8%; separately, the VIX eased to 15.81 (-4.2%)

Kashkari of the Fed said it is time to start raising rates, but the ADP employment print came in weak; the 10-year Treasury yield held at 4.617% and the 30-year at 5.174%

That said, no deal is final, and reports of a Houthi attack on a Saudi tanker in the Red Sea put supply disruption back in view

Inside the Ticker

AMD — Data Center Is Half of Revenue; Net Income Carries a One-Off Gain

AMD AMD | $482.05 | 1D −7.0% 1W +12.2% 1M −6.6% 3M +35.7%
Income statement flow

Q2 revenue was $11,536M, up 12.5% from $10,253M in the prior quarter. Data Center was 58.2% of it.

Year over year, growth is essentially Data Center alone

 Data Center $6,718M (58.2%), operating income $2,103M against a $155M loss a year earlier

Client and Gaming $3,841M (+6% YoY), with operating income down 24% from $767M to $582M

Gross margin 53.8% — most of the gain sits in the prior-year base

Up 14pp from 39.8%; the company cites the absence of last year's MI308 export-control charges and Data Center mix

Sequentially, gross profit rose 14.5% against revenue's 12.5% — a much smaller spread than the year-over-year one

Net income $2,297M exceeds operating income $1,990M

The $307M difference traces to other income of $598M (from $98M), whose increase the company attributes mainly to an unrealized gain on the public listing of non-marketable equity

Real earnings power is the 17.3% operating margin; operating income rose 34.8% sequentially

 Six-month capex $1,197M (+142.3%), yet FCF $4,124M (+116.3%)

Investment is not outrunning cash generation, on a continuing-operations basis
